About WFP & the Role
The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian agency. With over three decades of experience in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, WFP leads efforts in emergency response, nutrition, and climate resilience. WFP is now hiring a Programme Policy Officer specializing in Anticipatory Action and Impact-based Forecasting for its project funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), focusing on enhancing resilience to climate change in Buner and Shangla districts.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Support & Training
- Assess capacity needs of flood forecasting systems across national and provincial agencies.
- Provide training in flash flood forecasting, impact-based forecasting (IBF), and anticipatory action (AA).
- Assist in installing weather and flood monitoring systems.
- Strengthen communication methods for early warnings.
2. Development of AA Protocols
- Design and test simulation exercises to validate anticipatory protocols.
- Collaborate with government bodies to institutionalize AA systems.
- Create a flood impact database for planning and research.
3. Forecasting & Communication
- Develop risk matrices and crisis timelines.
- Conduct vulnerability assessments.
- Improve community-level early warning communication tools.
4. Coordination & Monitoring
- Ensure coordination across PMU, PIU, and district groups.
- Monitor project progress and maintain beneficiary databases.
- Contribute to gender-sensitive disaster risk guidelines.
Qualification & Experience
- Education: Master’s in Meteorology, Hydrology, Environmental Sciences, or related fields. Bachelor’s degree with 2 extra years of relevant experience is also acceptable.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years in early warning systems, disaster risk reduction, or forecasting.
- Skills:
- Strong command of forecasting tools (GIS, remote sensing, etc.)
- Effective training and communication skills
- Familiarity with impact forecasting, AA protocols, and risk modeling
- Languages: Fluent in English, Urdu, and local languages
